Jiyeon Park: PPE4

Reflection

During this semester, I haven’t got my clinical placement yet. Therefore, I reflect skills that I learned in PPE4 skill class instead of clinical placement. In this semester, I learned how to commence intravenous fluid. I already learned how to connect IV fluid to IVC last semester but in this semester I need to draw a medication and add to IV bag, so it is upgrade version to me. Moreover, I need to put a blue label sticker on IV bag, and it is another challenge to me as well. From the start, I was really confident for this skill class due to I passed last semester OSCA proudly and this skill class is almost same except adding medication to bag and label sticker. However, I needed to draw 18mls of Amiodarone which is used for adjust unusual rhythms of the heart (Ogbru, 2015).to add 5% of 500mls glucose bag and this was the largest volume that I draw. I needed to practice with large syringe to draw large volume and keep forgetting blue label was made me really challenged. A positive aspect of this incident, I have opportunity to learn to draw large volumes of drugs and put it in to IV bag with aseptic technique which is really important that need to be making certain about safety and avoid to cross-contamination (Aruscavage, 2013). Moreover, I learned why blue label sticker needs to put on IV bag and how to write this. The reason for labelling the IV bag is to avoid errors connected to wrong route, drug, patient or dose (NSW, 2012). A negative aspect of this incident is I felt really challenged due to labelling is not familiar to me at all. I’ve been practicing these skills since this semester starts, and I am still not confident to it. It is one step forward to real nurse life to me to be as a professional health practitioner. I need to check the drugs for three times, patient identity for two times and even labelling with another RN as well. I know it is really important due to we handle peoples’ life and if we make mistake, it is not able to be return back as normal. I know this challenges going to be my skills after repetitive practice and it is going to be my great assets for my professional career. That’s why I need to practice skills and pass the OSCA to make it mine these skills. To improve these skills I could have more practice in skill class. Due to handling the needle, I am not allowed to get equipments and practice at home. Therefore, skill class is only chance to me to practice these skills. I could have use my practice time more practically and confirm my skills to tutor for make sure. I have two more weeks to go for skill class and I can apply one practice OSCA class. Therefore I have only three times for practice these skills. I will use these times very actively and I will not hesitate to ask any questions to tutor relate to skills to make these skills to mine and pass the OSCA as well.
